When choosing a wedding château near Bordeaux, compare more than its façade. Accommodation, ceremony spaces, indoor alternatives and travel between locations will shape the experience for you and your guests, as well as the photographs.

Two banks, two very different atmospheres

Bordeaux's vineyards split into two distinct personalities on either side of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. The Left Bank, covering the Médoc, Graves and Sauternes appellations, is where you'll find the grandest nineteenth-century estates: long gravel drives, formal gardens, and architecture built specifically to entertain at scale. The Right Bank, around Saint-Émilion, Pomerol and Entre-Deux-Mers, tends toward smaller, more intimate domains, often centred on an old stone village rather than a single grand house. Neither is more "Bordeaux" than the other; they simply suit different weddings.

Architecture and reception spaces

Compare preparation rooms, ceremony spaces and reception layouts. Château Gassies, Château Smith Haut Lafitte are starting points for venue research. Château Gassies is in Latresne. Confirm event arrangements and capacities directly with each property.

Accommodation and a wedding weekend

For a wedding weekend, ask whether accommodation and the event spaces can be booked together. Properties to investigate include Château de Sanse, Château Camiac, Château Rigaud. Check exclusive-use conditions, available dates and what is included with the venue.

Questions worth asking any estate

  • Is the property available for exclusive use, or will other guests or tour groups be on site?
  • How many guests can the reception space comfortably hold, indoors and outdoors?
  • Is there on-site accommodation for you and your wedding party?
  • What's the backup plan for weather, and how does it affect the light we'll be shooting in?
  • Are there restrictions on timing (harvest season in particular can limit access to certain areas of a working vineyard)?
